Georgian living room - colours

user1484830599 · 14/04/2018 16:03

My living room needs an overhaul as it is very dated. We have very high ceilings, large windows with original shutters, picture rails and a white marble fireplace.

I'm very nervous of getting it wrong. I don't want to go neutral (my default) but am wondering about a very pale blue, but then I'm wondering if it would feel too cold. It is an East facing room.

Any recommendations for paint colours or ideas please? I am stumped with a house of this age, as anything too modern looks completely out of place. It is a lovely period room, and I want to do it justice

Sage?

HouseMouse77 · 14/04/2018 16:15

Have a look at the farrow and ball range even if you don't ultimately use it. There range fits Georgian houses nicely.

Check out Pinterest
Do you have an ornate ceiling?
Could paint the ceiling a colour and the walls white?
I'm liking blues Atm

PoshPenny · 14/04/2018 16:25

I would say blue will be cold if you're east facing. Or could you do a warm cream type colour and introduce blue in some accessories if your heart is set on blue.

user1484830599 · 14/04/2018 17:00

NotWeavingbutDarning he room is green at the moment so I'd prefer to move away from sages/greens, although I did wonder about a duck egg.

Housemouse77 thank you, I have a f&b colour card but choosing a colour is the problem. I quite liked borrowed light but then the colour on the tin looked nothing like the ones I'd seen on Pinterest etc.

I'd prefer to move away from creams, it sounds silly but I just feel like it deserves more. We have another living room (decorated by the previous owners) that is bright red and a real statement, and i'd like to create that in this room too. I hope that makes sense.

Tomboytown we just have a plain ceiling, nothing ornate. It's white, and i'd prefer to keep the colour on the walls.

A deep teal or oxblood?

GibbousMoon · 14/04/2018 17:16

The World of Interiors magazine often has Georgian size rooms.
This is a link to second hand copies of the magazine.
What they seem to show is that much of the decor is the pictures that you have on the wall. But there are also many mag cover pictures.

I have borrowed light in a similar room, and on one wall in the breakfast room, and they look like totally different colours( both great though ), pale blue on east facing dining room and very soft grey in south facing.
Get a tester pot and paint a large sheet of paper, stand iron your room and see if you like the effect.
I like pavilion grey too.
Georgian rooms look great with white and pops of colour.
I looked into the history of it and didn’t like lots of the colours that were popular when the house was built. Mustard yellow and mustardy green, and some sludgy browns and reds seemed to feature strongly. But also the pale blue of borrowed light, or Laura Ashley duck egg blue.

HouseMouse77 · 14/04/2018 17:25

It might be worth doing a color/mood board with the other colours used on that floor in other rooms. It can be quite jarring to use too many "statement" colours if they don't go well together. The thing with FB is it's all about the light in the room. You really do need tester pots and to try it in the room.

HouseMouse77 · 14/04/2018 17:26

Do you use Houzz? Might be worth a look for Georgian sitting rooms and see what strikes you.

KingsHeathen · 14/04/2018 18:19

This Georgian Terrace is Easy facing and this house has the sitting room a pale blue (as indeed does next door too!) to give you an idea. I did have a look at others in the road, but many are all white/magnolia I'm afraid.
Another area to look at is the centre of Worcester (WR1 for Rightmove) where there are a great many Georgian houses to look at and see what works. (Sorry, don't know areas elsewhere to look at, though Bath and Bristol might be good too).

KingsHeathen · 14/04/2018 18:20

Easy...grrr. East, obviously.

Tomboytown · 14/04/2018 19:55

Could you check that link?

kaytee87 · 14/04/2018 19:59

What about a strong mid blue?

I'm not a big fan of blue on a living room, however I did contact F&B recently (via Facebook message), as we were getting a new kitchen & I couldn't decide on a colour for the island. They were fab.i gave them size of room & direction of windows on 3 sides as we'd knocked through. Also sent a photo of the chosen floor, (recommend you do this & a pic of the fireplace), also that I wanted warm tones &neutral colours that would feel good next to the garden greenery outside.

They replied back fairly quickly with some feedback & several recommendations of their colours that would work & explained why they would be good. I do love F&B paints anyway but was really pleased with the service that time.

Also if there are any other things that are non negotiable such as fireplace, note them-door colour & style, or treasured art/ornaments. I'd love to be in your position but also know it's stressful. I always have buyers remorse before I've even committed to decisions!

buckeejit · 14/04/2018 20:18

I have borrowed light in a West room & it's nice. Also have pavilion grey in my bedroom, also west facing & adore it-we've a picture rail which is white & above & the contrast is beautiful!

user1484830599 · 15/04/2018 08:23

Mimibunz the other living rooms are a very dark red so I think I need to balance it with a lighter colour in this room.

Thank you GibbousMoon for that link, I'll look at the back issues, great idea.

OhyesIam thank you. I think I'm a bit put off as we looked at a different Georgian house when we bought this and that was blue all the way through, and it felt cold. That was west facing though and it was a much bluer blue (I think I want a really really pale blue). I definitely don't want a grey.

Housemouse77 yes I know exactly what you mean. Our house is a funny layout over 3 floors so that floor is just living rooms and a couple of bedrooms and bathrooms and other than the red room everything is cream/neutrals. That is something that worried me a bit that they wouldn't 'go together' but they don't know. I will get a tester pot, I just don't want to fall in the trap of buying endless tester pots.

Doh! I mean they don't NOW. I'll look at Houzz too. I just wish there were pictures of actual family living rooms, rather than immaculate showhomes.

And thank you Buckeejit, that sounds like great service! I'll try that.

Kaytee87 Thank you but I'd prefer a paler blue for this room.

If anyone would be kind enough to share pictures of their borrowed light rooms I would be so grateful. You can pm me if you prefer!

KingsHeathen your link doesn't work but I'd love to see. I'll look at Worcester Bath and Bristol too. Thank you.

Our East facing kitchen is FB Blackened. It looks a very pale blue. I love it. But you would really need to see it on your wall in your light.

user1484830599 · 15/04/2018 09:04

Thank you housemouse77 that could work. Any chance you would you post a pic? (Or pm me if you prefer?

Little Greene do period house colours. There’s some that were originally Georgian.

HouseMouse77 · 15/04/2018 09:07

I can try. I'm not sure how well I can photograph it without a proper camera as it's so light dependent. I think it mostly looks nearly white in photos but not at all like that in person. Anyway, I'll give it a go.
