Georgian living room - colours

My living room needs an overhaul as it is very dated. We have very high ceilings, large windows with original shutters, picture rails and a white marble fireplace.

I'm very nervous of getting it wrong. I don't want to go neutral (my default) but am wondering about a very pale blue, but then I'm wondering if it would feel too cold. It is an East facing room.

Any recommendations for paint colours or ideas please? I am stumped with a house of this age, as anything too modern looks completely out of place. It is a lovely period room, and I want to do it justice

Thank you housemouse77.

Thank you Fridasfridgefreezer, I had looked at little greene, as I love their paint but none of the colours appealed as much as borrowed light. I think that is definitely the favourite for now.

Sorry, it's my phone playing up, I think!. Will try later on a desktop.

My borrowed light room is messy & full of seedlings at the mo but here-nice enough when there's loads of sun

Thank you KingsHeathen - I had a problem linking to rightmove sold prices recently, not sure what's up with it.

Thank you so much Buckeejit, that looks lovely.

I do quite like blackened too, are there any others I should get testers of? I probably will stick with F&B.

I like blackened-it's greyer & more neutral.

Start with those 2-have you far to go to get samples? They are quite expense for the sample
Pots so again rec messaging F&B (don't mean to be pushy!)

If there's any other colours you're thinking of, it's good to get a 'wild card' as ime everything looks so different on your own walls.

Ink blue is the colour for you.

user1484830599 · 15/04/2018 22:21

Thank you Buckeejit, I really want to avoid greys, I'm definitely set on a blue. It is the cost of the farrow and ball testers that out me off, so I'll definitely get in touch with them. I've just realised you can see pictures in real homes on the farrow and ball site which has been really helpful today. I'll try blackened and borrowed light as a start, I think.

Dairyisclosed I can't find a paint called ink blue, what brand is it please? Ink suggests dark to me, I want a very, very pale subtle blue.

Greys have a real mix of any number of colours & can look very not grey. Search MN for the thread about grey hallway. It was kind of epic but shows just how different a colour can look. We ended up with a sort of greens grey for our island which is F&Bs old white!

I know what you mean, had a lovely grey in my last house. I don't think grey is right for this house though.

I've had a fantastic afternoon drooling over gorgeous Georgian houses on Rightmove, thank you for the idea KingsHeathen! They are all far grander than mine (and FAR more £££) but I feel like i know what I want more now.

We've got Borrowed Light in an east facing bathroom. It's a lovely soft blue, not cold.

IdblowJonSnow · 16/04/2018 20:33

I'd second teal blue. If you get the right shade it would look rich rather than cold. Did you see the latest agatha Christie on tv? The house featured in that had so many teal rooms offset with red and mustard. Beautiful. Enjoy your house it sounds lovely!

user1484830599 · 16/04/2018 20:33

Thank you SwedishEdith. Its top of my list so far, I'm just a bit worried it will be too dark for what I have in mind, I want a really, really soft pale blue. I'll get a tester this week anyway and give it a bash.

Craig and Rose pompadour.

user1484830599 · 17/04/2018 11:19

Thank you Nomad86. I'd looked at craig and rose, but Pompadour is much too dark. I was looking at Anstruther Blue, but even that is darker than I'd like.

Darrow and ball Hague blue?

user1484830599 · 17/04/2018 16:38

Nooo way too dark! (Thank you though, I do appreciate any suggestions).

I want a really, really pale almost white-blue

Oops missed your reply idblowJonSnow! We already have a really rich red so I don't really want anymore dark colours. The back of the house is quite dark (set into the hillside) so it really needs light colours to lift it.

It is a lovely house, I am very lucky.

I have used borrowed light in my bedrooms, it's very pretty but I am not sure it's strong enough to make an impact in large rooms with high ceilings.
Cornforth White is a beautiful grey (with a touch of lilac), a really lovely neutral colour, do you have wooden floors or carpets?

Alwayscheerful · 17/04/2018 16:57

I see you have decided against grey . Google oval room blue, looks fab in period houses.

franktheskank · 17/04/2018 19:27

Pictures might help?Smile

user1484830599 · 17/04/2018 19:34

I will tidy up. This is the floor though.

Farrow and ball Hague blue far too dark and dingy, it's vile.
Go with a paler colour like you suggest op.
