How would you style these shelves?

Renting at the moment so have to work with what is already in the house! There are several shelves beside the fireplace but how what would you do with them? At the min I've just shoved a load of stuff out of the way, but I don't want it to look messy. Any ideas?

I'd find some baskets to fit the lower shelves. Then as dancemom says books, dvd's, candles and photos

Yes definitely get some square baskets to fit the lower shelves. We have these and you can hide clutter brilliantly out of sight. Then candles (faux or real) or perhaps a few books and maybe faux flowers. If you're grouping things together, they look best in groups of 3. Frames photos look nice too.

Can you remove the second and fourth shelves from the top? I'd have plants on the top couple of sheves and books mixed with photos/pictures towards the bottom.
