I am currently in the process of updating my hall. It's in a 1980s time warp what we inherited!
I'm having a new oak banister put in and oak doors.
I'm wondering if I could paper just at the bottom of the stairs , one wall only as it's not very smooth for painting or will it look odd?

You could paper with lining paper, if you use the thickest grade it will smooth out the wall and you can then paint it all the same.

It will look odd. You need to get the wall skimmed or similar so it looks like a normal wall. Trying to cover it with paper won't work

Omg you have the exact same dated time warp hallway as me!! Blue carpet and all Grin

We're doing ours this summer, I'd have it skimmed by a plasterer rather than just hoping lining paper worked.

I would also recommend getting the walls skimmed. It may cost a bit but honestly, putting lining paper over it before painting is just putting off the inevitable and creating more work for yourself. It will have to be done one day and you will be glad to have got it done. We got this done last year having ‘coped’ with uneven walls for 27 years. Then you have the option of just painting or wallpapering, in the knowledge that if you do eventually decide to remove it, it will come off easily and will not need lining or skimming again.
