What should I do with my hole?

We bought a property a couple of years ago that we're slowly re-decorating through. We've got a problem with what to do with a strange window between the stairs and the family room.

The family room was added as an extension by the previous owners and the window is where the old front door used to be.

We were going to take it out and put shelves in the gap but after starting this we've identified a problem. At night, we shut the cat in the kitchen/ family room. She has a cat flap and this means she can go in and out as she likes, has access to food and somewhere warm to sleep but can't wander the house leaving 'presents' or jumping on beds. We have 6 month old twins and a 7 year old so need to keep bedroom doors open sometimes.

We really should have thought about this before starting to take the window out 🙄

Anyway, my question is can anyone think of anything we can do with the window/ hole when we take the window out?

Trying to avoid bricking it up if possible as it would make the family room very dark.

Pictures of the window from both sides and a floor plan for context!

Glass backing for the shelves? Would let light in but not the cat. Eg those big glass tiles?

The only other thing I can think of is opening it all up as a doorway again but we were trying to keep expenditure to a minimum while I'm on maternity leave 😬

Or put shutters over it so you can shut the car in at night but leave them open in the day.

I have a similar odd window. I painted the glass with emulsion paint and stuck up a picture in the middle of it.

Hadn't thought of shutters either! Thank you
