2 different colour sofas in same room?

Could this work?! They will be opposite each other. 1 is my pre-DH lovely mocha one. The carpet is green, and there are various green/blue/purples in fireplace tiles. Curtains are a peachy neutral (eugh yes I know we inherited the curtains!). Walls fairly neutral. Wondering if I can get away with a blue or purple sofa opposite then tie in the common colours with cushions iyswim?

I have thought about this and decided it would work! The green carpet complicates things though........ I'm picturing a more neutral floor. Floorboards. Parquet. Something like that.

Thank you! Yes I was wondering whether to speak to DH about changing carpet. Really we need 2 new sofas but with young kids it seems a bit stupid when we've got my lovely mocha one sitting unused with loads of use still in it.

I would only ever have non-matching sofas, in both colour and style! I'm not a fan of everything coordinated and matchy-matchy, so yes, IMO two different coloured sofas would definitely work!

Excellent thanks! I guess a 'safer' option would be 2 different shades of brown but I think they would have to be sufficiently different so it didn't look liked we'd tried to match them and failed?

We've got two sofas opposite each other and they match. The sitting room is elegant in style and we wanted the sofas to look symmetrical/formal. Mismatched sofas tend to look more informal so I'd say it's more down to what you're trying to achieve.

You could also consider a couple of armchairs with a little side table opposite the sofa. The sort of layout like the picture.

The carpet doesn't sound very lovely but if you decide not to change it, then you could always add an area rug on top.

To add, the point of 2 armchairs instead of the sofa is that it would be easier to find sth suitable. You wouldn't want another sofa that's completely different and looks random but not sth that looks like you tried and failed to match - a very fine balance to stike.

i'm like silentthief - will never match

busybuildingdens · 05/03/2018 23:56

We have two different colour sofas, because we couldn’t get the original colour when we finally had space for two. We have gone for one coloured, and one fairly neutral, but I think your idea sounds fab!

Littlelambpeep · 05/03/2018 23:57

We two different sofas and it works really well

nowater34 · 05/03/2018 23:57

Yep I dont like to match either. You want the styles to be complimentary but different colours/fabrics are fine.

mammmamia · 05/03/2018 23:59

I've got 2 one chocolate brown and one charcoal plus a deep purple armchair. I love it.

Casmama · 05/03/2018 23:59

When we bought this house the previous owners had one brown sofa and one green- it looked great.

BedtimeTea · 06/03/2018 04:15

They would probably be fine...but you could put a slipcover on one, if they do not. Can you dye the curtains? To a colour you will be using in the room? You have mocha, green, blue and purple, I woukd not introduce any more colours though. The fireplace tiles would be a good "muse".

losingmymindiam · 06/03/2018 05:37

I think it would look good. Could you put a funky rug in between? Tie in the colours with opposite cushions. Put 'mismatching sofas' into Pinterest . Loads of great looks come up. I'm not a great fan of matchy matchy rooms anyway.

flumpybear · 06/03/2018 05:39

We have a deep blue large corner sofa and our children have the old white sofa which is still nice and has removable covers so easily washable (unlike blue sofa!)

Saying that our room is very neutral with a wooden floor, grey rug, white walls and black and white curtains and fireplace

I used accessories to tie in the 2 colours

namechange2222 · 06/03/2018 11:35

Hate things matching, it reminds me of my parents three piece suites! I've always had two wildly different coloured sofas but usually in same material plus a chair in different material and style
