As you enter a room, if either side of you is a light shade of a colour and the wall in front of you is a darker shade, the far wall will look further away and therefore the room will look/fe

Shock See, things like these are the reason why I paint all the walls white/magnolia. I can't get my head around all this.

Yes - generally the darker the colour the more it "recesses" the wall it's on.

It's a bit like painting the inside of a bookcase to make the shelves look bigger.

It's obviously not going to make a 2m square room look 4m x 2m though.

Yes thats right. You need the same colour though just different shades. It wont work with yellow side walls and a dark blue end wall.

DH was a decorator. He says it depends on the size of the room and how light it is.

Thanks for all the repliesSmile
Very light room now that DH has designed the celing lights. It’s a kitchen /diner and the walk I’m talking about is just the back of the kitchen part of the room.
We are lucky in that it’s a biggish room anyway but I’m keen to maximise, not get the shades the wrong way around and make it look smaller.

Yes, that should work then.

One colour - Valley of Desolation, Hicks & Weatherburn's #59 but in 4 shades or dilutions for feature walls, woodwork, ceiling & other walls.
Works well in one room and can be done with all colours apart from very light ones of course.
