Navy hallway - what colour carpet on stairs

We're planning to paint our hallway F&B Hague Blue, Railings or similar. The hallways do not have a lot of light but the main rooms in the house are big and bright. All of the rooms in the house except the children's rooms and perhaps a couple of smaller rooms are going to be painted F&B ammonite with strong white on the woodwork.

The downstairs hallway floor is going to be oak. I'd like to carpet the stairs and hallways. There are a lot of stairs and quite a bit of landing between the rooms as the house is tall, narrow and long (Edwardian). I was originally thinking pale grey but I wonder if this is a bit too preppy? DH is thinking charcoal or black. I think this is way too much dark. I definitely don't want cream either. Any other suggestions?

I'd go with grey. Yes, black too dark, would show every little bit up too.

Are stripes on stairs still a thing?

Is seagrass easy to keep clean? Is it scratchy? I love the look of natural carpets, but wonder how practical they are.

I had stripes on the stairs in our last house, but I think there is too much hallway to carpet to put stripes down. It would be a huge statement!

I worked in an office that had seagrass type on the stairs - it looked lovely and I was saving up to replicate at home.

Then a girl slipped on it and slid down the stairs - no broken bones only minor bruising but the amount of skin that was damaged was quite shocking really badly scraped, it had to be treated at the hospital.

I have carpet.

I have a beautiful black carpet with flowers. I HATE it. It needs vacuumed about 3 times a day, every hair strand, bit of fluff, makes it look dirty and is very noticeable. I'd go for light coloured carpets in the future. It's a lovely carpet, cost a fortune and will last for hundreds of years sadly

I think grey would be lovely (I also have Hague Blue, and adore it!).

I'm going to against the grain here and suggest that you don't paint the hallway a dark colour. A dark area with dark paint means that there won't be any light reflected and this could be a safety issue if there are stairs.

Also, a dark hallway isn't very welcoming, and if you are planning on selling the house in the near future it could be quite off putting.

I also think silvery grey.

I don't like dark paint. Navy sounds awful.
Seagrass smells if it gets wet, so I would not put it in a hallway. You can't wash it so it is not ideal in a high traffic part of the house.

Thanks for all the comments. We've actually decided against the navy paint - it' a huge windowless hallway and I too was concerned about it being too dark. We're going with Cornforth White instead and dark navy on the front door. I'm also toying with Inchyra Blue for the dining room which has a massive and beautiful sash window and isn't as dark as Hague Blue. We've found a black and grey dogtooth carpet for the stairs, which we quite like but actually we've decided to hold off on recarpeting until we've had the hallway decorated. I'm very in love with some v expensive pale grey Axminster and Naked Flooring carpets, thanks to Pinterest and Instagram!
