Hallway and stairs

I have a magnolia hallway and stairs walls and cream carpet with white woodwork

Very boring

Any ideas on how to make it look a bit more interesting?

And are you thinking of painting or wallpapering? Does the carpet have to stay? Is it a light or dark hall? Wide or narrow?
