Restoring old leather trunk

I have my Grandad's old leather trunk from when he was a pilot in WW2. It is fairly battered and therefore nothing special but has obvious significant sentimental value. I'd like to put it back into regular use as a toy box, in soon to arrive, DD nursery.

On the lid of the box it has his name, rank and number printed on. I'd like to preserve this, as over time it is getting more and more worn, scratched and faint. The trunk is Green Leather (presumably was fairly shiny once).

Any suggestions for the best product to use to preserve the writing on the lid? Was wondering if I could clear varnish it, but with what varnish?

Or can anyone recommend a good furniture restoration website / forum that might be able to help?

Thank you
