Ideas for revamping a sofa? Photos

Possibly very boring post but no success hunting online so hoping that the collective MN wisdom may be able to help!

I hate our sofa. The colour and the texture in particular. A new one is off the cards for now due to finances. Any ideas on how I can make this one look better and go with a new colour scheme (monochrome mostly)?!
Throws didn't really work, the sofa is too big and they look naff, like they've been thrown there to protect it while we're painting or something.

Any genius ideas please? Photo attached.

There's nothing wrong with your sofa- when did you get it? Presumably you liked it once? Why did you change the colour scheme? Creams/tans/browns would look fine with it. I know that's not in at the moment, but you'll find it hard to cover up a sofa that size effectively at a reasonable price. Would you consider repainting to suit the sofa until you can afford a new one more to your liking?

Very easy. Buy new cushion covers for the loose cushions. Cream, gold, that sort of thing. You can also get leather dye and dye the leather, it's the stuff you use to renovate clsssic car seats. I think the company is called furniture clinic. You can also buy special fabric dye for rhe seat covers.

I hate it for two reasons - the room it's in is not so big, and it takes up a lot of the space. That might not look so bad if it was a lighter colour, but in brown it makes the room look drab and dark and small. Secondly because it's brown and in hindsight just doesn't go with anything we have!

We bought it 3 years ago from a neighbour who was moving out and selling it.

I'll try and look for replacement cushion covers somewhere, not sure what we'd do with the brown fabric parts of the base though....

When do you want to keep it? I'd sell it on and buy something that they right size for the space and the look of which you like.

And yes, I can't imagine a good looking room with that sofa in it.

How much would you spend on revamping it?

Because in your situation I think I would do as PP suggested and sell it, then buy a “new” secondhand sofa.

And a monochrome scheme with a large brown sofa is never going to look good, I’m sorry to say. Black & white & then HUGE BROWN SOFA won’t work.

If you have to keep the sofa, you’ll need to decorate to complement it rather than the other way round.

I had a sofa along those lines that my husband had chosen for a different house. It didn't fit right in our new house and despite changing cushion covers and buying throws, it just didn't work. I wasted money trying to make it nicer when it would've been better to have found something second hand using the money.

Thanks for all advice. Have managed to sell old sofa (and it's been collected!!) and picked a new one today from a local clearance warehouse for much less than it would have cost from DFS and the like. Problem solved! Grin

Blimey - you are a quick worker! Well done!

Thanks! Eagerly awaiting the delivery of our new blue sofa tomorrow. The colour may have been brave but I'm hoping it will be a nice splash of colour and I won't be back on here asking for more advice... Grin
