Has anyone got a Farrow & Ball Brinjal room?

We're redecorating our front room to become a bedroom. It's quite large but it's also very dingy, doesn't get much natural light. We also have a huge dark-wood bed and are inheriting some dark-wood furniture from DH's grandfather.

My vision was to "embarce" these elements and go for a lovely dark warm colour with soft lighting and a few accents of gold (wall lights, possibly mirror / picture frames).

I'm on the verge of wimping out of Brinjal though - it really does look very dark. Has anyone gone for it? Ceilings, above picture rail and skirting boards would still be white.

No, but I have been looking at it for our lounge. Lovely colour.

We have a north facing bedroom with matte dark navy walls (F&B didn't have quite the shade I wanted, so we have Midnight Navy from Crown), white woodwork and ceiling and curtains. I love it. We have gold accents in there too. I say go for it.

I've got a tin of Brassica to try for a gentler option but I'm pretty sure Brinjal is going to win!

My front door & side gate is Brinjal, it’s quite marooney red, if that makes sense, I’d say go for it & embrace the gloom especially if it’s a large space.

Weirdly enough in two different Homebases I’ve been in, tins of Brinjal have been reduced to £15 so might be worth checking there before you buy? FWIW I loved the colour.

There are lots of photos on Google images. They nearly all look gorgeous. Go for it.

I have a Brassica bedroom and a Brinjal front door - both are lovely colours.

I was tempted by Brassica for my bathroom but the F&B sales assistant warned me off it - she said it looks lovely on the colour chart but never really works in practice. I have no idea what to make of that!

I have seen a bedroom done in Brinjal and it is beautiful - but yes, very dark. I think that is easier to live with in a bedroom than in a living room. I'm sure it would look lovely with gold accents. You could, alternatively, freshen and lighten it up by contrasting with white bedding and curtains?

I know this post is very old and the OP likely won’t see this but, I am deliberating painting a small, north facing living room with Brinjal and wondered if you went for it and how you’ve liked living with it? Likewise, if anyone else has opinions I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

@Handsinthedirt we painted a living room at our last-but-one house in Brinjal back in 2015. It was a large, south-facing room overlooking the garden with a high beamed ceiling in an Arts & Crafts extension. The room was previously magnolia and I remember it took three or four coats to completely cover this. Unfortunately I can't find a pic, but it did look amazing with all our antique oak furniture, eclectic 'stuff' and lots of textiles in jewel colours.

I think it will look lovely and cocooning in your room! We'd definitely use Brinjal again - there just aren't enough rooms for all the colours we love in our current (much smaller) cottage!

Ah thank you so much responding. Yes, I am going for the cocooning vibe. I have an orange velvet sofa and some beautiful live edge wood shelves with Victorian cast iron shelf brackets and I think they’ll look good with this as the background. Did you have to use their dark colour primer or anything special to get the colour vibrant?

LibertyLily · 04/04/2026 22:47

Sounds fabulous @Handsinthedirt- I love the idea of an orange velvet sofa against the backdrop of Brinjal 🧡💜

We didn't use their primer - perhaps we'd have needed less coats if we had!
