Can you paint wood effect laminate kitchen cabinets?

Wanting to update the kitchen with a limited budget. I currently have a wood effect laminate kitchen with slate effect worktop from Howdens.

I want to tile the floor and replace the worktops so I can put a Belfast sink unit in. DH doesn't like granite or quartz, so it's got to be wood. I don't want wood on wood, so I was looking at painting the cabinets duck egg or grey. I've found lots of tutorials online which indicate that it's possible, but have just popped into the local howdens depot and the guy in there said no way. He said the paint would bubble and that I'd have to replace the doors. (With howdens ones obviously )

Does anyone have any experience here? Can you paint laminate cabinets and if so, is it hard wearing? Am I better off just getting new doors and kick boards etc? Any idea on the cost difference?

Yes you can! I know you can use the V33 paint but I’m sure there is others you can use.

Yes I've done it on the last kitchen we had.
We had old fashioned wood effect doors , I sprayed them with plasti-cote spray , was easy to do . I just took them off , washed and sprayed. It lasted for years until we replaced the kitchen. This was ages ago , there are loads more products available to use now.

Much cheaper to paint the doors you have than replace them.

Yes. Use dulux supergrip primer. The delivery man was disappointed that I was using it on laminate furniture and not tile I got the impression it'll prime basically anything.

Thanks for the feedback! I was so sure that it was possible. The guy in Howdens clearly just wanted me to buy new ones!

I guess I could also use filler in the holes for the existing handles and change those too.

You could also have a look at zinsser for primers. I have the 123 which covers anything, inside or out!

I use zinsser bullseye 123 primer with eggshell colour on top. I have very successfully painted many ikea billy bookcases which are smooth laminate

I can’t imagine you will have any problems

We were able to peel the laminate off our kitchen doors. We realized we could do this when the one next to the oven started to bubble and I “accidentally” ripped the bubble.
I found smooth mdf underneath so was super easy to paint with mdf primer and then cupboard paint.

Chalk paint is fab on Ikea furniture. I've just used it on my 1980s laundry room fitted kitchen type cupboards but can't say how hard wearing it will be yet. Some shades can be overpainted with clear Fiddes varnish but others go nicotine ish. My dining table (Ikea Norden) has really stood up well so I've used the same paint/varnish for the crappy laminate worktops in the laundry room. Best thing is that there's no prepping. I've gone for a smoothish finish - not distressed - and you can see brushmarks but I quite like that.
