RIse and fall lights

Would like to get a new light above our kitchen table - it's in the kitchen but in its own space.

Do rise and fall lights work? And would they give enough light for someone to work at the table and then be nice when we have people round and want it to be a bit more subtle lighting?

Task lighting and mood lighting tend to require different lights. You could try sth with a strong lightbulb and a dimmer switch to adjust the brightness to what you require. The down side is lack of energy efficiency.
