Will I regret painting my average sized living room black, they look nice on Pinterest ?

I think they work best where you have large windows with lots of natural light and high ceilings. They can look great in period properties (I'm thinking victorian with large bay windows /high ceilings).

Hmm our room is fairly light , but not Victorian

I love the look of dark walls on Pinterest but not sure I would like it in reality as I like bright rooms.

I have painted one wall a dark teal in one bedroom & it needed many more coats than usual to get even coverage.

Maybe do one wall first & see how you feel about it? And you can always repaint!

I think so yes, it's far too goth. If you want a dark room go for something like charcoal, teal or navy.
