What furniture with this fireplace?

Have recently moved into a lovely Victorian apartment with this beautiful original fire surround (ignore the horrible electric fire, am going to replace it with a log burning stove)

The problem I'm having is that all my furniture is from IKEA and looks wrong in this room. At the moment it looks like a bunch of students live here Sad What would you do? Should I try to match the wood or do you think painted furniture is better?

I have a similar style Victorian house, either try to match the wood (tricky) or have white furniture to contrast and allow the lovely fireplace to be a focal point that stands out - along with the door which also looks original. Too many shades/types of wood in one room can look a bit busy imo.

That's what I was thinking ontherightpath I don't really want to have all dark wood period furniture, I'd like it a bit more contemporary so may go for something painted in white or grey instead.

I think I'm going to keep looking and once I find a piece of furniture I love I'll base the room around that
