Rug over carpet

Hi please can you give me your opinions on this. We had laminate flooring with a nice wool rug but have just replaced with a nice thick carpet. I have taken the rug up now as - although it's very nice - I don't think it's necessary. The carpet looks lovely on its own and I think the large rug will flatten the pile and ruin it.
What do you think?
I'd really appreciate your opinions.
Thanks.

I only use rugs as a form of protection for carpets in high traffic areas. So when I had carpets, I had a long runner on top in the hallway...but it sounds like you don't need one anymore.
