Has anyone bought a new mattress recently?

I think I need a new one (can't remember how long I've had mine!). Everything seems to have changed with all these mattresses in a box and memory foam, etc. Any recommendations? I've just looked at the Independent reviews and they recommend a Casper or Leesa. Any views?

Can't comment on the Casper or Leesa but I spent a ridiculous amount of time choosing a new mattress. Personally, I hated the ones that were completely memory foam and much prefer sprung mattresses. Most expensive mattress I lay on was £16k! (Not that spending that was ever an option)

Narrowed it down to either Hypnos or Ikea and finally decided on Ikea Hovag mainly due to price (£16k would get us 60+ Hovags!!)

Four weeks in and I love it - but it's definitely personal choice.

Norris Bedding or Natural Mat Company. Had both and both dreamy. Norris slightly better IMO. Old fashioned, proper mattresses.

Harrison mattress here. Super king bed so two singles that zip together. It's hand made and feels ridiculously luxurious. Our old mattress was twenty years old and I hadn't realised how bad it was till we got this one, its cost a lot of money but is worth every penny.

Which? consumer mag have just done a section on best mattresses and most of the best were the ones in a box! See if you can find the review, well worth reading

BelafonteRavenclaw · 26/08/2017 21:30

We have an IKEA Hovag too and I bloody love it. We've had it for about 18 months and it is still the most comfortable bed I've slept in.

CycleHire · 26/08/2017 21:30

John Lewis natural sprung mattress. Loving it so far. Didn't fancy any of the memory foam options as I thought it would be hot and sweaty and possibly (horror!) smelly.

whatnextfred · 26/08/2017 21:31

I got a Leesa and love it ten months later

Fairylea · 26/08/2017 21:31

We just bought a "Joy" mattress from Warren Evans and absolutely love it.

Not a recent purchase but still gorgeous!

3littlebadgers · 26/08/2017 21:36

IKEA Hovag too. I look forward to bedtime Grin

You really have to test a few to see what's right for you. Your size and weight are a big factor so what's good for one person might not be suitable for you. We recently bought a Vispring. It was £££, much more than we expected to spend but I love it!

Got a fabulous super king ottoman storage bed and mattress from Dreams.... had to get a zip link mattress with 7000 pockets (equivalent of 2x3ft single mattresses)so we could get it upstairs!!... paid nearly £4.5k for bed and mattress but our old bed was 27 yrs old!Blush
Bed is so comfortable, feel like I'm in a 5*hotel now

fedupandnogin · 27/08/2017 07:53

Wow so many different options and opinions! Gives me even more to look at and confuse myself with! Thanks everyone!

I like the shop mattressman - we recently
bought s sprung mattress and memory foam topper - full foam mattress was horrible but firm sprung mattress and sifter memory topper is lovely

Stickaforkinimdone · 27/08/2017 08:19

I bought a Silent Night pocket sprung mattress about a year ago and absolutely love it

Around the same time my mum bought one of those boxed mattresses touted as being 'the most comfortable mattress ever' ( I think it was by a brand called Eve?)
Anyway, she says it is indeed very comfortable.....but it is also BOILING because the bloody thing doesn't breath enough. She's had so many disrupted nights sleep through waking up too hot and sweaty that she's now got a new mattress and gone back to a traditional pocket sprung

fedupandnogin · 27/08/2017 08:25

Yes I was worried about being hot with those type of mattresses (particularly as I'm reaching that age of having hot flushes :-D ) Also I did sleep on one once (maybe it was a cheap one) and I was rolling towards my partner as he was heavier than me (and I didn't want to!).

We have this:

It's amazing.

fedupandnogin · 27/08/2017 09:17

@Littlegoth I've been looking at that one based on it coming up well in reviews.

mineallmine · 27/08/2017 09:39

I have the Sealy one too and I love it. It took me a couple of nights to get used to it during which I thought we'd made an expensive mistake but I love it now.
I also have an Ikea Hovag in our holiday home and I was waking up with a stiff back in the morning. But it's new so maybe again I need to get used to it? My two children have Hovags and love them.

CottonSock · 27/08/2017 09:42

I got one from dreams therapur actigel. Don't get that one! It collapsed in days and is going back. Also makes me hot.
Now going for a natural filling handmade sprung one.

Etymology23 · 27/08/2017 12:38

I know a few people with Hovags who like them. I got the John Lewis 1000 pocket sprung special buy for £375 inc the divan base in double which has been the comfiest bed ever - have one in the spare room too and every guest has commented on how comfy it is :)

Jultay · 27/08/2017 21:37

I've just had s memory foam Dreams mattress bit it was from a seconds shop so instead of being £800 was £250 for a king size .
It's just great so blummin comfy I don't wanna get out lol x

JoJoSM2 · 28/08/2017 12:10

We've invested in a Vi Spring and I haven't slept funny since. I find them to be the ultimate in mattresses (although I've never tried those that cost 5 figures).

For a more budget friendly option, Ikea mattresses are fantastic. Both DH and I had them in our first flats and they were great to sleep on, durable and even had a washable cover. For a mattress under 1k, I'd definitely go with Ikea again.

Ladybird909 · 08/09/2017 20:43

I had to buy a new mattress recently and had no idea where to start as well. I looked at the Which trial results and the Ikea Hovag was one of their best buys and scored really well. It was also very cheap!!!

We've had ours about six months now and it's really comfortable and because it was so reasonably priced I'm not worried if it gets a bit battered by my four year old daughter.
