Red in a south facing room?

I have massive, (expensive!) curtains that I love. We're moving house and I think they'll fit the new sitting room.

But they're red and gold and the sitting room is directly south facing. I think this might look awful, just too warm? All info says go for cool colours in a S facing room. I don't think there's a cooler colour I can pick out for the walls either.
They're these. I appreciate not to everyone's taste!

Still pondering this, I think my actual question would be 'what colour walls would go with the curtains but not look awful in a south facing room?'

South facing rooms can be decorated in any colour. You can't change the light eg make a warm room cold - you can only give the illusion.

I'd just hang them in the new place and then decide.

RoganJosh · 08/09/2017 21:04

It's just such a golden room anyway, I'm worried it needs toning down! Whole house is a shit hole and it being painted before we move in so I need to decide now.

I have had a yellow S facing room and it looked great - realny sunny and warm. Perhaps you could pick out some of the yellows/golds from the curtains for the walls? I probably wouldn't go with red as I associate the colour with traditonal formal dining rooms and can't see it working in a very sunny, light room.

Be careful, red fabric fades terribly and it'll happen quickly on a south facing window.

Thanks everyone.

We do have to use these curtains I think.

I'm not loving the idea of a gold and red room but I can see how it's the best option in terms of colour coordination.

Hmm

You have great colours to work with. Given that it sounds like a very light and airy room I'd run with it and go for a Mediterranean inspired room. The walls I would paint in a warm pale stone colour, sofas in warm mustardy golds, accent chairs in red pattern, big rug, lots of big plants. Use yves klein blue for accents on vases cushions etc.
Let the curtains hang straight no tie backs.

RoganJosh · 09/09/2017 13:28

Oh yeah, curtains definitely are without tie backs.

Warm pale stone. That sounds promising.

Thanks!

We have red in our south facing sitting room. Farrow and Ball recommended Dimity for above picture rail and Archive for below. I love it! Will try and post pic.

Our south-facing sitting room has red voile panels across 2m of French doors and windows. Plus a red Persian rug and red tartan-ish cushion covers.

Walls are cream (Crown Clean Extreme emulsion), floor and doors are oak, furniture is oak and sofas are black leather. The red is a great accent colour without being OTT. Whole room looks slightly retro and clean-lined.

Not sure you can see to well as it's v bright in there!

Dimity is lovely, possibly a touch lighter. Let me see if I can find what I mean. Op I think the colours you've found are on the right tracks, maybe a touch lighter. Get sample pots and a roll of lining paper. Tear off big sheets, paint at least two coats and put up on the wall with masking tape. You have to see the colour in the light in the room. Ideally do this once a plain white undercoat is on as other colours on the walls can alter your perception.

Puffpaw · 09/09/2017 18:14

Op is it possible to see a pic of your room? It would be good to see the ceiling height and flooring

RoganJosh · 09/09/2017 20:08

Ah dimity is nice.

Room has 30s parquet floor under the carpet which we'll be using, and the ceiling is a couple of feet above the door.

Currently looks like this! Shock

Shock Very jealous of the parquet! Dimity and archive were both in the red palette in the F&B chart.

Puffpaw · 09/09/2017 22:23

It's going to be. Lovely!

RoganJosh · 10/09/2017 18:38

Thank you so much everyone. I'm feeling much better about it now. And thank you for sharing your gorgeous rooms.
