How do you choose everything and get it right?

Decorating our main living room, lived in house ten years haven't even had proper curtains in this time.
We've decided on Dulux Polished pebble (believe me anything other than magnolia is brave for us). How do we choose the right curtains?

We have brown leather sofas in the room also. I've been googling and pinteresting for weeks but I just cant see how people do it and I'm really worried if we get it "wrong" we're stuck for another ten years!

There's no right or wrong really - it's your house and you should choose what you like and what appeals to you and your oh's taste. If you've got a colour card for your paint colour you could take it to some shops and see how it goes with some different curtain fabrics/curtains? Think about what sort of feel you want to have in the room? Cosy? Modern? Beachy etc. What will it be used for? How light is it? For example I'm thinking about redecorating our front room and I know that I want a dark and cosy colour and a grown up/sophisticated feel with bright colour from pictures, curtains and other accessories. Maybe a new rug? We'll probably paint the walls first and then gradually add in all of the other things as I find something I like. It's a light room with a bay window so can take the dark colour.
