As above - obvious question but I'm afraid I don't know how to work out which way a room / garden is facing?

Whete does the sun rise and set ?

Use the compass on a smart phone (assuming you don't have a real one) or look the house up on google maps.

Look up the house on a map or google maps. The compass is often just shown as a cross (+ not x) with an N at the top for north. Clockwise, the directions are North, east, south, west.

Then you know which way the different walls are facing.

Really stupid question then - so if the living room main windows face south but the other living room window faces north (double aspect) which way is it facing? South or north?
Sorry for my stupidity!

In that case, you'd have to say the front faces south and the back faces north (or whichever way it is)!

I think of it as front and back of house rather than individual walls. So our house front faces the south and back garden is north facing- not good. South facing garden is most coveted apparently but then isn't front/sitting room for me going to face north which can't be great.. dq

Surely no need to use a compass, computer or phone? Look out of the on a bright day at lunchtime to find south (or find E or W morning or evening) and you can work it out which way your main window faces from that.

So your room is south and north facing. I suppose if one wall has a lot more windows than the other then you might pick that direction to describe it as that's where most of your light is coming from.

That makes sense - thank you!

So next question! How do I tell which was my garden is facing? It's wide and almost wraps around the house

The point of knowing which way your garden faces is to know how much sunshine it's likely to get and therefore what plants to grow.

So if it wraps around, part of it will be north-facing, part west-facing etc, and you should take that into account when choosing plants.

If you're needing to describe it to somebody else, e.g. To sell it, then you would refer to the biggest or most usable part of the garden, so if the large back garden faces north you could describe it as north facing even if the other thinner or smaller bits face other directions.

Does that make sense?

If you google 'sun calc' and type in your postcode /house number etc - it will find your home and show you the sun curve
