How does a grey kitchen look in the winter? Too grey?

We are thinking of light grey cabinets for new kitchen, with probably wood effect worktop. The kitchen is north facing so doesn't get a lot of sun.

Grey would be fine now in the summer, but once the clocks change and the days become greyer, will it just look too grey and drab?

Do you have a grey kitchen which lacks sunlight?

We do. With lime green upstands. Get decent lighting. Our walls are off-white. Looks fab.

Sounds lovely. Decent lighting and careful touches of colour.

Grey would be really nice but what if it looks dreary in the winter.
White might be a pita to keep clean but it would definitely look brighter, even on a grey wet dank January morning.

I like clean and fresh when it comes to home decor, so white is definitely the safer option.

I'm thinking of a fairly bold choice (geometric or Moroccan tile effect) for floor so simple might be best for cupboards.

Not all greys are the same! Our living room is quite a deep grey but it never feels dull. Do you have access to a independent paint shop with a colour consultant? I found that very helpful. The person we worked with explained about undertones and helped me select shades that worked well together

I think white can look much colder than grey. It really depends on the grey. We have a low ceiling' ed North facing grey living room and the grey looks warm.

Have you looked on Pinterest? You'll get some great ideas.

We're getting a new kitchen put in, and are going more extreme - black cabinetry on the lower half.

We don't get a huge amount of sun in winter, although sky lights definitely help. I'm not too worried about it though, as the bench will be white, and all the top half and dining area will be mostly white - subway tiles and walls. Wooden floors.

I want it to look more like a cafe or restaurant than a bog standard kitchen, so bookshelves in the island with objects as well as cook books, things on the walls, maybe one wall (or part of wall) painted in a strong colour.

I'm not too worried about it looking too dark, with other things bringing colour and light into it.

Grey sounds lovely, and there's lots of grey kitchen inspiration out there!

I've been pinning away on Pinterest but tbh a lot of the grey kitchens are too dark for me. And the one Ines I do like are kitchen with a lot of natural light. Which ours struggles with for half the year.
My pins are definitely tending towards more white kitchens lately...

Go with white furniture then paint the walls grey - much easier to change. !!!

we have a white kitchen with grey walls (Fired Earth bone white). It doesn't look too grey at all.

This is my grey kitchen in progress..... not a room that gets a lot of sun but have gone for grey walls and off white units. It now has grey slate tiles above work surface es. Cream colour on other wall at front which brightens it.

These are all lovely, but not grey cabinets. 😄
I like the idea of grey walls, but it would need to be the perfect warm grey shade (if that even exists!)

Feel like I've talked myself out of grey cabinets. Kitchen planning is all theoretical while dcs are on holidays. Don't think a day out to the kitchen showroom is their idea of fun! 😂

We inherited a grey gloss kitchen when we moved house 3 years ago.
Grey cupboards with grey work surfaces with black gloss kickboards to match the gloss black pull-out larder / fridge surround on opposite wall.
Kitchen is in great condition [so not being replaced], despite it being fitted for so long that the colour is now back on-trend!
Loads of mid-blue, navy and white small wall tiles as splash back. It looked really smart, but was incredibly dark and gloomy - despite facing West.
We've knocked a wall out to create a kitchen-diner (which the previous owner had blocked up - we've simply returned the house to the original floor plan). Replaced the grey worktops with a glossy white laminate (with a few sparkly bits in), removed the horrific tiles, replastered and painted the walls F&B Wimborne White. What a difference! Warm, bright and cheerful - just what we were hoping for. No photos available to upload unfortunately as we're not finished (still got flooring and woodwork to do).
Instagram is great for looking at other folks home interiors to see what actually works. It helped me to decide on the colour scheme.
There are literally thousands of people on there loving grey right now, so plenty of inspiration!

What do you have now OP? Can you paint existing cupboards in different shades to see how it would work? Won't cost much to do and will give you a great idea

Some greys are cold

You could always change the blinds - yellow in summer - green in winter to give you a new look

Yes to lots of lighting - cupboard tops underneath etc - makes a high difference

We have a painted wood kitchen in a pale grey and love it... It's very bright even on dreary days...
We have a white worktop which is made of a synthetic granite.... The name of which escapes me;)

my bedroom when I was growing up had grey walls and a grey carpet and it was actually lovely and never felt cold at any time of year - it is really just a case of finding the right shades. I would agree with previous posters to perhaps stick to grey paint rather than the cupboards as it is easier to change.

Our kitchen is north facing. The cabinets are painted in farrow and ball cornforth White (which is grey) and it doesn't look dark at all. Worktop is white Quartz which helps to bounce light around.
