Subway tiles in kitchen - will they look dated?

We're having a new kitchen. For reasons which are beyond me, we've never had a tiled kitchen spashback - just paint.

However this time is like tiles. I've never chosen tiles before and have no idea where to start.

I like the effect of subway tiles but will they look a bit dated in a year or so.

It's a modern kitchen with handleless door and slate grey corian worktops.

What would you suggest?

I think I know which ones you mean (white, rectangular?) but can you post a pic?

I think they will look very 2016 / 2017 as they are ubiquitous at the moment. However, who cares!? If you like them have them! You live in your house, unless you are planning to sell in the next few years I'd go for it.

I've had them for 10 years and they look great still. I don't think any tiles in a plain colour will date. (Unless maybe brown....or orange)

I have subway tiles in my kitchen - tiled in 2007 and I still love them! I've changed the style of my kitchen several times and the tiles have always adapted to the look.

Personally, I don't like them at all. They remind me of public toilets!

If they make you happy then get them!

I've got lovely sage green ones - they make me smile every time I walk into the kitchen.

However they're completely flat. I really dislike the ones with bevelled edges which remind me of a Victorian Public Convenience, as mentioned above!

I think they are a classic design. We have white ones in our bathroom with period style toilet,sink, taps, etc and it looks modern but timeless IMO. Id love them in our kitchen if we ever manage to get rid of our current grotty one.

I love them and if i am ever fortunate enough to be redoing a kitchen they'll be there! Don't care how outdated they look. Anything has to be better than tiles with bowls of fruit on

No bevels, I agree!
They've been around for at least 10 years and I think they were popular in the 1950s too.
Grey grout was "in" recently, but I'd go for white or as close to the tile colour as possible.

They remind me of public toulilets too. I think they look horrible.

I am torn about this - having considered them recently- they seem timeless but they were a definite fad and were everywhere there for a time so will be seen as being from that period and as being trendy rather than classic.

The kitchen will look a bit like this ('kashmir' coloured units and mid grey worktop.

I think either white or blue subway tiles but I'm also drawn to these geometric ones!

The geometric ones will date far more quickly. Rectangular, flat metro tiles are a design classic.

Love metro tiles. really love those geometric tiles, but don't think I'd be brave enough!

They're a design classic in that they come back into fashion every few decades but they will date. But then so will the trend for white kitchens. Everything dates so go for them if they're the ones that appeal.

We have several lots of these tiles (kitchen/bathroom/utility) and they look great (our house is approx 1910), but am 100% with FreezerBird and Sgtmajormummy about not having bevelled edges (though totally flat ones are harder to find!)...

For totally flat metro tiles try Johnson's Tiles.

They could be done in a different pattern rather than the typical offset pattern?
