Are built in wardrobes the only option?

Hello everyone.
We are renovating our house and have hit a dilemma in our bedroom. Having ripped out the existing built in wardrobes which were 20+ years old and falling to bits we are left with two lovely alcoves either side of the chimney breast.
I looked around for wardrobes but I'm a bit stuck with what to do. One of the alcoves has a width of 89cm and one is 109cm - are there such things as matching wardrobes of different widths?
I guess we could put two slim wardrobes but lose space in the larger alcove.
Is the only other option fitted to maximise the space? I don't have an issue with getting them other than the cost (have spent a LOT on our renovations) and we got built in wardrobes in our last place. Loved them. But then obviously left them two years later. I'd like to have a piece of furniture that's mine. I'm not sure how long we will stay here honestly.
Looked at pax but that won't work for us.
Anyone got any better googling skills than me?!

Ikea do a tall shelf unit at 20cm wide. Could you put that in the bigger alcove next to a wardrobe to use up the extra space?

Oh that's a good idea thank you!

Could you put those extendable rails across each alcove for hanging and a chest of drawers below and cover with a curtain from ceiling height to the floor? Still functions as a wardrobe but doesn't look like one and would solve the dilemma of the size discrepancy. I wanted to do this in our bedroom but we rent from my Parents and they didn't want unusual changes in the house that might be considered weird by the next tenants and put them off.

Not sure the husband will go for the curtain idea but I will share it! Thank you

Neeko can you link to the shelf unit for me? I can't find any 20 wide!

Glad you found it because I'm hopeless at links!
Hope it is what you are looking for.

My DP wasn't keen either Grin I just have a real obsession with curtains and fabric in general and had got it into my head I could buy a few pairs of curtains in different fabrics so I could swap them if I fancied a change
