Terracotta tiles on hearth - can they be painted ?

Just planning .. buying house with hearths that have terocotta tiles on them - too warm for me - could they be painted black somehow or do I just need replace ? Thanks .

Terracotta can be painted....I not long ago painted my hearth which wasn't terracotta but some kind of heat resistant nasty from the 80s...I used blackboard paint and it's been fine.
