Glossing over window ledge

The previous owners left some oil objects on the windowsil which has eaten through the paint and into the wood. It now has a funny texture that isn't flattened by sanding. I was hoping to give it a quick gloss over but worried it would do more damage.
Without replacing it all (as it's enclosed by tiles), is there anything I could do to improve its appearance? I've painted the rest of the kitchen now and am not ready for bigger jobs just yet.
