Stair carpet wearing through - cheap, temporary fix?

The edges of the carpet on a couple of our stairs are starting to wear through - it's only going to get worse and it looks a bit tatty already.

We're on a pretty tight budget at the moment and can't really think about getting the carpets replaced - has anyone got any tips for a temporary fix? Anyone tried those adhesive 'stair treads'?

Have a look at your bottom step. There may be excess carpet folded under so that you can unfold it and shift the carpet upwards to move the wear off the treads.

I took the carpet up and sanded and painted the stairs. Looked fine.
