Playroom flooring

Hoping to turn a spare room into a playroom & after some inexpensive flooring to put on top of laminate.

I know there are foam, interlocking squares but they don't seem very lasting. Would it be more sensible to buy rubber to avoid paying cheap, paying twice?

Are there other options I haven't thought of?

If it's a regular shape you could use carpet (off cut /end of roll bargains ) with the edges whipped - makes a big rug that's relatively inexpensive and can be replaced when it's had it - and is soft for knees and bottoms for kids playing.

We've used form interlocking squares for 3.5 yrs in our playroom and they are still going strong. We had them on carpet for 2 yrs and they have been on laminate for 1.5 yrs now.
