White curtains?

Our dining room is quire dark. It's decorated in neutral colours and has stripped wood floor. I want white curtains, proper lined curtains, not voile but nobody has these so is it a bad idea?
DM says it will look cold and the curtains will get dirty.

In my house they'd be clean for about 20 seconds then covered in finger prints, jam, tomato ketchup, even if Those things had never been anywhere near them

I had white curtains in my first ever house ! My mum and I made them out of heavy painters dust sheets ( high ceilings !) looked good for the five years I lived there !
