Anyone used Parquet or alternative for living room?

I've always loved parquet flooring. Yes, it is expensive and we'd need to do our hall, stairs and landing in something cheaper.

Has anyone used it and do they love it or have any problems or have an alternative recommendation that they've used instead?

I'm awful at making decisions!

We used Karndean, I think they do a parquet effect and it's easy to clean and warm.

We have engineered parquet flooring which allowed us to put underfloor heating in too. We love it.

I love parquet flooring, it always makes a statement, I've original floor boards otherwise I'd seriously consider it. I do think investing in good flooring uou love is important as you live with it for years.

We have oak herringbone parquet. It was under the carpet of the living room when we bought the house - we had no idea it was there. We had it restored and it is beautiful.

We had an extension and matched up the existing parquet to the new. Bought 50m2 from eBay for £360 from a 1950's bungalow. Then scraped tar from every bit and paid to have it professionally laid. That was £1500 but it looks amazing I. Our open plan kitchen & snug.

We sanded it ourselves and dyed half to colour match. Then revarnushed it. Took ages, but will last forever. Easy to clean too.

We lived in a rented house with the most beautiful parquet flooring. I love it!!

Purplebluebird · 10/03/2017 21:54

My dad has it. In my flat I used to have hard wood laminate, (very common in Scandinavia). I love both to be honest! Not much help, just wanted to say either option looks lovely!

Ooh, I'm more tempted. I've wanted to view unsuitable houses in the past just because of a parquet floor! There is some reclaimed on gumtree but I don't think I'd have time to sort it all out.

Can a decent joiner lay it or would it need to be a specialist? Off for a bit more of a Google....

I love parquet flooring. I'd love it throughout my entire downstairs area. Too ££££

wowfudge · 11/03/2017 10:47

I think laying parquet is a specialist job. The guys who restored our floor only do floors - restoration and new floors.

venys · 11/03/2017 10:53

We have the original stuff restored. Although it does.get a hammering with the kids on it. It does require a specialist to lay - we had to fill in some gaps because of layout changes and it is important to get the levelling right.

Miniwookie · 11/03/2017 22:46

I have original parquet, but because it's pitch pine, in dents and scratches really easily. I still love it though and if you got it in a harder wood it would be fine.

Anyone got parquet karndean and are willing to share a pic?
