Do I need a fitted sheet for a futon

We are getting a futon for my son's room which will be slept on every night and then used as a couch by day.

Are there specially fitted sheets that you can buy or are you expected to sleep on the mattress?

I just use a normal fitted sheet on ours. If I was sleeping on it everynight, I'd use a mattress topper as well - those can be washed and will stop the mattress staining/marking which is important when using it as a couch
