Is my search for a comfortable sofa bed a giant oxymoron?

Just that really... can anyone help? I need a sofa bed for our new nursery. I want it comfy enough to sit on to feed/sit/wonder how the hell to raise a tiny human being, and also be able to use it a bed, not a piece of torture equipment for guests. Preferably grey, double mattress if not bigger. I looked online, but without going to try them all out I honestly don't know what to base it on!!

My DSis has the comfiest one I have slept in and it was from Ikea!

Ever tell me more! Do you know the make or model? Did she buy it recently?

You need one for 'everyday' use rather than occasional use. Can't remember where we got ours from but it has a thick sprung mattress rather than an inch piece of foam.

We have this with the better mattress option and it's really comfortable.

We have a decent one from John Lewis. It has a nice thick mattress.
Comfortable to sit on too - you wouldn't know it was a sofa bed.

We have one from Next. It's a lovely deep, really comfortable sofa and also pretty comfortable as a bed. Think it's the Michigan in a dark grey weave fabric and we absolutely love it.

Semaphorically could I ask which mattresses you have? Ordered that for DD and she pointed out how thin the mattresses are yesterday, thanks.

This approach worked for us. Two years sitting on sofas in shops, and we had got nowhere.

We have one from John Lewis. It is 20 years old (!) and does need recovered now but sofa still super comfy and it's probably one of the most comfortable beds in our house. It's got a good thick mattress on it and is a proper double size-wise.

Thanks all, I really like the look of the Ikea one, it'd go with the nursery furniture too, although the no arms when it's a seat might annoy me after a while... god it's a mine field. I'll have a look on John Lewis too. I think the key to comfort is the mattress when it's a bed isn't it, and by that I mean not a think whispy one but more a normal bed type one. I like this style too, I think cos they look like they're huge when folded out.

You could go with this one with bolsters as arm rests? Like the pic?

I'll vouch for the ikea one too. As comfortable to sleep on as a real bed, and still going strong after 10 years.

Our Futon Company is still going stroking and very comfy after 15 years. It's heavy to move (as in move house / rooms) but rock solid and easy to turn into a bed and back again. And it has arms. This one:

We have bolsters at each end to prove arm cushioning, and the wooden arms are very handy for putting drinks on.

We have just had a willow and hall one delivered and slept on it last night. It's brilliant!! You can choose fabric, sofa shape, mattress type and cushion filling. As our parents will use it we wanted to make sure it was a comfy bed and it's a memory foam mattress that's about 12 cm deep.

We got our suite from DFS and chose to have the 2 seater as a bed settee, it has a sprung mattress that is about 5-6in deep. We have a memory foam topper that we can put on top too to make it super comfy.

We have just been pondering the same thing. So many sofa beds have metal frames with thin mattresses and are only really suitable for one person, even if they are supposed to be doubles. We have ordered from this company - they have different options for mattresses and look much more comfortable.
