Do you have a pantry?

Just wondering really I you have one and what you do with it?

I have moved to a house with one and planned on kitting it out with shelving, but is it a waste of space? Should I use it for something else? If you have one do you fill it? How would you decorate it??

The space is about 1.7m x 1m with a high ceiling (3m)

We have a pantry and use it like a stock cupboard so we are never short of toilet rolls, soaps etc. I love it and it helps keep my kitchen tidy and organised.

Shelves of organised stuff!!
Bags of dog food!!
Pans /baking trays /big bowls!!
Clothes horse and the Dyson!!
Then shut the door
And you have a tidy kitchen!

The shelfs of organised stuff makes me happy, but DH is worried i'llstart stocking up for the apocalypse

I am building one! Intending to use it to store food and drink only. Looking forward to lots of cupboard space. Also want to get into canning!

I love a pantry, always had one or two in every house. Don't get rid of it. Mine always get basic white tiles and shelves.

We have a walk in larder - so I suppose pantry by any other names. Lower space used for bulk storage items. Upper shelves tins, jars etc. Rear shelves for preserves, Christmas pudding and cake etc. Wine cooler under shelves.

MIL's house had one. Its sort of the kitchen equivalent of a walk-in wardrobe, I suppose.

We have one, and it's fabulous. I love ours, and you will too. Far better use of space. If you can shelve it all the way round, then do so. I have one wall bare for the ironing board and carrier bag holder. I'm sure there are loads on Pinterest to encourage you.

I live rurally Sleepy, my pantries are 7ft by 3.5 ft, two of them, the cold one is full of food, the one with the hot water pipes has shelves with kitchen stuff, DC art supplies, Dustbin of dog food, shoe rack and a few coat hooks.

I like it because i just have a few freestanding kitchen units - I don't need masses of kitchen storage.

I'd love a pantry
MIL has one and all food except fridge and fruit goes in there!
The shelves are shallow so everything can be seen, it's brilliant

We're doing a kitchen extension at the minute and I badgered dp to let me have a pantry - I'd LOVE to see pics of yours 😀

We've got the original 1930s one, about 1x1.7 like a previous poster, and the original concrete tiled shelf with some extra shelves up the walls on either side. Used for all food except fridge, freezer and fruit. We have two Ikea units underneath for tea towels and shopping bags and wrapping paper and other random tat that doesn't have a home. Also has slow cooker, breadmaker etc stored in there. I love it. Both neighbours either side have taken the shelf out and turned it into a downstairs loo which seems such a shame!

What's the difference between a pantry and a larder? Is a pantry a small room but a larder a tall cupboard? I'm in Australia with two tall cupboards that are called pantries, but I think they might be what the UK call larders. (I didn't have either growing up in the UK so I'm uncertain. Hope this isn't too off-topic. Thanks.)

There isn't really a difference nowadays, Penelope. Before fridges were invented, meats were stored in vats of lard in cooler rooms (hence: larder) and regular food was stored in pantries.

Now the terms are used interchangeably though I think pantry is probably the more common, and I don't think 'larder' is used in Australia/NZ/US/Canada etc at all.

Aha! Thanks RuedeDay. Well, in that case, in response to the OP, I have two. They are each the size of a normal door and the inside is made of sealed asbestos sheeting which means they are (touch wood) totally mouseproof; a true blessing where I live.
All of my food is stored in them. None in my normal kitchen cupboards at all.

I had one built in when I had my kitchen replaced last year. It's actually a hall cupboard which just had junk in it and we knocked through a wall in the kitchen to access it.

It's not huge but it's got wrap around shelves and storage pockets on the door for chopping boards and trays. Each shelf height was designed for different types of food so that the best use was made of space.

I absolutely love it, and it has meant we needed fewer kitchen units!

Eagle, that's a lovely cupboard. I had something similar in previous house, although not as deep or as beautifully organised as yours.

I thought as ours was quite roomy it would be a better idea to convert it something more practical. We have a WC and a separate utility room next to it.
Baking trays etc are stored in the kitchen at the moment, although relocating to the pantry would be a good plan.
Quite like the idea of stocking up on essentials when on offer. Nappies and dog food are bulky!

What's the thoughts on shelving? I've got a tall freezer to go in there and a big wine rack. (Micro chips and Lambrini anyone?)
Would it be cheaper/better to put up my own shelfs or buy an IKEA unit?

We're just building one and I can't wait. It is going to free up so much space in the kitchen and others ha move said allow me to bulk buy certain things like bottles of water and get bigger packs of cereals, pasta and rice so you're never short of basics.

Ours is is insulated from the rest of the kitchen / diner and has an air vent to the outside to keep it cool. I can't wait to stock up!!

Also - what is wrong with preparing for the apocalypse?!

We have one, I love it! Ours is the old utility room so it's pretty big, lined with shelves and a wine rack.

I stock up on things like loo roll, dishwasher tabs, detergent and have plenty of room for storage.

We have one with shelving. It's where we keep our home made jams as well as dry goods and kibble but also our bin and garden shoes. Our shelves are shallow so we wouldn't be able to stock up for the apocalypse.

Ps. Ours had an electric outlet. I've never known what to use it for. Too small for a dishwasher or anything. I have plugged in a torch but we don't really need a torch. Anyone with electricity in theirs I'd be curious to know what you use it for!
