Has anyone regretted getting shutters.

I really love shutters. Massive bay window and would need to do another room do they match. My husband not keen- says will be dark and cold. Do you love them or regret spending so much money.
I really want them- know eyewateringly expensive but do will the bespoke curtains I will need made for this big window.
Also worried they are last season lol- been saving so long they are out of favour

I've been wondering the same thing for about 6 years and still no shutters. I've got white wooden Venetian blinds as a nod to the look.

Most people I know who have them though seem to never fold them back.

They make our sitting room dark, & the dust loves them.

I absolutely loved my shutters - recently moved to an older property where they aren't an option.
The original quote was eye watering but once they were done we loved them and thought it was a great decision.
I loved the privacy / light control.
It may depend on your property but I do t think they are any darker than blinds / Curtains

They are the only thing in my house I haven't regretted! I went for mdf rather than real wood and that helped with the cost, but they are so well made no one can tell. I never fully pull mine back but I never intended to as I need the privacy. I got wide slats, much easer to dust as they don't wobble.

I loved my shutters.

The ones I wanted were certainly pricey but I managed to talk the salesperson down, so always worth a go.

My white wooden Venetian blinds look pretty good and were fairly cheap.

God, I love shutters but the cost is so high, downstairs is eight windows, and I'm told an average of 1 k per window.

If considered Venetians, as the lower cost option, but I'm hanging on in there at the moment and not calling it either way,,,,,

I have solid ones (not slatted plantation style) on an awkward shaped window. They are wood, not MDF. I went for shutters because the shape could be utterly bespoke, unlike curtains or blinds which would have been a mishmash and looked like a compromise, no matter how beautifully made.

The shutters are fab. Great for keeping the light out and reduce noise. They look smart too. They were incredibly expensive though.

In general, I prefer well made Roman blinds. I prefer the softness but if you've got difficult windows, shutters are a good solution. A nice set of well made blinds in gorgeous fabric will also cost a fraction of the price of shutters.

I have mine in bay windows and absolutely love them! It's a large light room so i never tend to pull them back! There were expensive but I will be putting throughout downstairs as I love roman blinds for upstairs but hate curtains!

Do shutters go on the outside or inside?

I love my white slatted shutters. Cost a fortune but I still love them 9 years on. Couldn't afford to have all the windows done so had Venetian blinds upstairs.

Inside, Johnboy. You can have them recess or flush fitted too (inside the window recess or sitting flush with the wall). Mine are flush because of the shape. They wouldn't open if the they were recess. The flush design means they can be folded back 180 degrees against the wall and block minimal light when open.

The fist pic example is a recess fit. The second pic I've attached is a flush fit (both from Google).

Sorry to keep posting, I'm not a shutter spam troll, honest . I went for solid shutters because like you, I was worried about plantation style dating. They were everywhere 10years ago and are still popular now (but more suburban). Given that shutters are a very expensive investment and last a long time (if you get decent ones), the style should be as timeless as possible. So I went for a simpler, classic style to try to avoid having the equivalent of 80's orange pine or 90's limed oak furniture hanging at my windows.

I love shutters. Compared to more traditional window coverings, shutters require very little maintenance plus control the light in our property and maintained privacy.

Some very useful opinions in this thread. I'm looking at MDF as at the price, anyone got any good company recommendations? I'm in London.

Steer clear of a company called 'love shutters xxxxx' based in Orsett in Essex. Their work was awful. We had to have 3 windows and a set of French doors replaced because they ruined them drilled huge holes into them and the surrounding plaster and window boards and the shutters didn't bloody shut properly or meet in the corners.

When we tried to take them to small claims they went into administration and opened up under a slightly different name. Looking into their history it wasn't the first time.

Be careful with mdf if you have any condensation issues, woods (period house? Wood Single glazing? Sashes?). They will swell & warp. Hardwood is more robust. We chose hardwood because we have period windows. I'm told it's less of an issue if you have UPVC as they are drier.

We have an oldish house and PVC, haven't ever had any condensation issues but good to know.
