Bay window curtains (with photos!)

Evening all, we are in the throes of decorating our bedroom. The room has a lovely square bay window, but unfortunately the windows go right to the ceiling and so there is no room for a curtain pole above the windows. The previous owner had used mounted some curtain tracking on the ceiling, but it looked awful.

Does anyone know of a bay curtain pole we can mount to the ceiling which is fairly priced? Curtain piles are so expensive, before you factor in the bay element and the unusual mounting.

I would put blinds or shutters in the bay and have a pole straight across the bay with faux curtains.

We had a similar issue and we bought the curtain pole and fittings for the ceiling from Dunelm. The fittings can be used either on the ceiling or the wall which is handy as we needed both.

The range at Dunelm is huge however I found going in to the shop easier as the website as it was easier to visualise how it would work when in front of me.

These are the best we found. They come in different colours and with fancy finials if you want them, and are made to fit perfectly. We got the corded ones but ended up cutting the cords because they force you to have wider, very 'gathered' curtains.

The problem with a proper rail is that the brackets don't allow the curtain to pass the bracket, so you get them bunched in the corners blocking light.

Either look for a nicer track (ikea? they do wall or ceiling mounts) or blinds, I guess.

I would go with roman blinds, plantation shutters or a track. Poles never look great in a bay imo.

I got a pole for my bay window from next. This was about 10 years ago though, so I don't know if they still do them.

I agree with Dunelm too - good prices for the quality of the product. We have a big Victorian bay, and bought ikea curtains and their standard length in 300cm - but because of size of window we bought two pairs and just sewed them together! Good luck, looks lovely!

Lovely windows, I would go for some very smart internal white wooden shutters.

Can you get a better quality track - you must be able to get something that just leaves a very neat white/silver flat track visible without ugly brackets.

It's possible to run a batten in front of the track which is covered in the same fabric as your curtains like this if you don't want to see the track. Or a narrow modern pelmet?

I have the same problem. I went for blinds at huge expense, and when they were being fitted, there were huge gaps letting the light through so we sent them back and have spent the past few years with a curtain cutting off the bay, which is what the previous owner had. I'm planning on getting better blinds soon.

I don't think ours looks too awful but we have wood painted windows and because it's the same colour as the wood (and a different colour from the ceiling) you don't really notice it.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll take a look at Dunelm Grumpy and scarftwins next weekend - their website is confusing so I think a trip to my nearest store will be in order (about 30mins away, but I can make a day of it!!).

Thanks for the link shimmeringice, I saw these ages ago when we first moved in and couldn't remember what they were called or find them again. It great to hear a recommendation!

I'll also look at IKEA for a nicer track - didn't even cross my mind to look at IKEA (despite my wish list of furniture coming from there)!

We have the same bay downstairs (but have a space between the windows and ceiling for a curtain pole) and struggle passing the curtain rings over the bends/joints, the curtains always get stuck on one side! So I want to learn from that mistake! (Pole came from next)

I'd love to put white shutters up and think it would look great. However, I'm a bit OCD with some things and want all the windows to look the same from the street and so if I chose shutters I would need to do them for the other two street facing rooms Maybe in a few years when we've saved up (our first child is due in December so we're in a mad rush to finish the DIY!!)
