Dark purple cloakroom? Mad or not?

Would I be crazy to paint my downstairs cloakroom in a deep purple colour? At the moment it's cream with a grey floor but feels cold and drab. Would purple be too much? As cloakrooms go it's a good size. Found a lovely big mirror with ornate border that would give it a regal feel, and I think we've got some white gloss shelves in the garage that I could put some sparkly ornaments on. Any other suggestions that would warm it up and go with the grey flooring? We don't normally go for bold colours so this is out if my comfort zone!

I wouldn't. Purple isn't particularly a warm colour. It's also light draining. It'll feel oppressive and bleak.

There was a thread recently in which iirc no less that OliviaMNHQ was asking for cloakroom advice and most of the suggestions were to go for something bold. There were a lot of votes for orange shades especially if you use the room for doing or checking makeup, as this gives better tone to reflected light.

IMO a 'warm' purple (not bluish) with sparkly ornaments could have a nice rich feel but maybe you could also consider the orange idea - terracotta maybe.

Yes, look at farrow & ball pelt for inspiration.

I'm going for bold in our downstairs loo.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure now! I really fancy something bold but Maine purple isn't the right way to go. I'll do some searching on Pinterest!

This ^^. Dark colours make me feel claustrophobic and depressed.

Will look amazing. Mine is deep turquoise. I love coming into it in an evening.

I'd love it, it's my favourite colour, I'd go for a deep berry-toned shade with lots of silver/mirrored accessories/decor to reflect light around.

I painted our downstairs loo (windowless) bright orange. Certainly wakes you up Grin

deep jewel colours are really on trend at the moment - lots of images in the M&S home catalogue and an article in Living Etc recently - probably that time of year

agree with Phoenix, def need to accessorise with it, antique or mercury glass for soap dispenser, vase, candle holders and paler flowers to accent it, maybe some eccentric wall art/print for a old England feel or go Morroccan!

Thanks all for the suggestions. We've looked at loads of photos and used the Dulux app where you can colour a photo of the room. Purple in our cloakroom looked a bit, er, tacky, so we've decided to use Mulberry Burst which is a lovely warm deep colour but not too dark. DH is painting it today so I'll let you know how it goes...

Could you just accessorise in purple?
Our cloakroom is painted white with grey floors and half tiled walls. Purple picture on wall, purple hand towel and purple reed diffuser. I love it.

I think it's all down to the house. I wanted this all white, cream, beige. Looks rubbish though.

So far the accent colour in all rooms is purple. Sofas purple, kitchen tiles will be purple, hallway will probably be Brassica from f&b.

😳

Insipid colours just don't work.

I think that it's a great idea and the perfect room to be bold in. I've got a dark purple bedroom and the paint came from Fired Earth - it's the colour in the picture with a sofa - gorgeous colour and I would recommend it. I've also included 2 pics of cloakrooms with bold walls to show there's nothing depressing about them - quite the opposite imo.

This is the before picture. Cold and unwelcoming. DH is painting as I type but he sent me away after he opened the tin of paint (in true Changing Rooms style). I'm too worried now to look! DD (6) and DS (2) are having a look and I can hear them explaining 'wow' and 'woooaaahhhh'. Hmm

It's a work in progress, but the painting is finished - attached photo! Not the best quality pictures, but you get the idea. Hoping that the mirror (can't do clicky links, sorry!) will bounce some light around and we've got a white gloss shelf that we could use as well, but I'm not sure about that yet). www.therange.co.uk/mirrors/wall-mirrors/antique-ornate-mirror-silver#452695

Briliant, does not look too dark at all.
The effect of bold colours in small rooms always surprises me. It works, where did we get this convention of painting things white?
