wide and short curtains

For my bedroom window I want wide curtains 180cm I think but short because I don't want them to cover the radiator under the window. However all the ones I see want to be long to floor and that keeps the heat trapped. Can I get ready made curtains like this is do I need them to be made?

The ready made curtains in [www.justlinens.co.uk] are either 150 or 180cm long.

But if you've got such a wide window, you may need to buy more than one pair (considering window width x 1.5).

Or just Wundaweb/hem a set of cheap curtains to the right length!

My sewing skills are none exsistant and my nan has said she's made her last pair of curtains! The issue is I don't want a really expensive set as we haven't decided room colour yet. Maybe I could hack of the bottom of the ones I have - it's not like I have visitors in my bedroom

Dunelm is a good option. We bought ours from them.

I second Dunelm as they have some ready made curtains in different and odd sizes. Failing that they will make them for you fairly quickly.

IKEA is great for cheap curtains. They they make them so long ( like 3 metres) to cover as many customers as possible, knowing that people will shorten to whatever they need.
Just a straight deep hem is fine and nobody sees mistakes on curtains because they're gathered and have the light behind them.

I have wide and very long curtains, too long for ready made. I also went to Dunelm, lovely linen fabric and made up at half the JL price.

Thanks everyone. I have decided to try and cut the ones I have and use wonderweb on the hem. The way I see it it's worth a shot as I don't like the curtains anyway

Problem is they should be shortened from the top by removing and reattaching the tape. We tried a diy hem at the bottom once and it doesn't look right. Don't know about "wonderweb" though. Just had some other sets shortened at the local dry cleaners - they charged £20 a pair.

I wouldn't wonder web them as it will give you a very stiff, rigid hem which won't fall nicely into pleats or folds or whatever when you open them.
Even a simple small running/tacking hand stitched hem, using colour matched thread, would give a better finish IMHO.

Winged harpy you are probably correct but a running stitch a cross a pair of curtains is beyond me. If they were living room curtains I would spend money but this is my bedroom that only dh and I see and as he would rather sleep in a pit then a nice room I have kind off given up.

If it's just temporary I've pinned up with large safety pins before.

Hufflepuffin you reminded me I once pinned up an extremely long pair of IKEA curtains in DDs bedroom and they were still pinned 5 years later when we moved house

Our local curtain shop will sell you readymades and cut them to your choice of length for about £25. Interestingly they do it by removing the header tape, hemming the top and reattaching the tape. Might be worth seeing if a local shop or online place will do the same.

It is usual to shorten curtains at the top so you retain the factory finished hems on the bottom.

My bedroom window is wide, we have eyelet curtains 137cm in length and I just bought two pairs. So open and stacked back you cannot tell they are separate and when you close them you just close them and adjust them so they look right. I can sew very well but cannot be bothered to sew them together. There is no need.

Ok I hacked off the bottom and wonder webbed a new bottom and although a little uneven really proud of myself :-)

I have the same in my bedroon, I got mine from Debenhams, they seem to do wide and short - in a packet, ready made.
