Red carpet...what colour curtains?

We have red carpet throughout the downstairs that is in really good nick, so we can't justify replacing it. But what colour curtains would you put with it? There are old school green velvet at the moment but I don't think they go. So I was wondering about dying them, or buying some more.

What sort of colour would you go for?

Cream or grey?

Gold?

How about something with red in it? There's some lovely patterned curtain fabric around. How old is the house? If you want to dye the green curtains, you'll only be able to use a darker colour and the green may affect how it turns out.

Velvet is very difficult to dye at home. They would cost a lot to dye at a dry cleaners.
