Deep red carpet help!

The house I am moving into has a deep red carpet on the stairs and hallway and I have NO idea on what colour to paint the walls to compliment it.

I have laid out a lot of money already and not in a position to replace it for a long while so trying to make the best out of a colour that I wouldn't choose myself.

Can any of you stylish lot advise please?

I think a creamy colour works well, so a strawberry and cream type effect

We had the same colour carpet in our previous house and chose a mother of pearl tint white, so a a bit pinky but not too picky. You will need a wipe clean paint if you have DC though, hands on the wall as they climb the stairs!
