Decorating uneven walls

We've had a stud wall and fireplaces removed in a room so although it has been patched and skimmed pretty well, you can still see where the patches are. I was planning to paint the room, but should I paper? It's a big room, I wasn't planning on the look or expense of papering. Any ideas?

How uneven? Erfut mav 1200 gauge lining paper hides a multitude of sins. Needs a bit longer to soak in the paste.Roll the seams then apply a very thin bead of filler (toupret or zwaluw) spread flat with a wet finger.

matt white emulsion...as many coats as you can bear to put on!

dd's room had terrible seventies built in wardrobes in the recesses that took up half the room when the doors were open, so we had to knock them out

walls obviously needed filled, replastering would have been nice, but no money for that when we did not even have proper central heating!
So polyfilla-ed, sanded. lined with heaviest lining paper and matt white-ed the lot

you really have to look to see where the bumps are...I suppose it helps they are at the back of the room so you never really have the light coming past them, but I was really quite pleased with how NOT shit it looked.

And I am taking the same view for the rest of the house....it's well over 100 years old, the walls are NOT flat...get the hell over it! :o

They're good walls, apart from the patched bits where the stud walls and fireplaces used to be. Also channels for new plug sockets. Think it will have to be lining paper, although that's a pain too because there are lots of ceiling beams to cut round...

Rather than lining, wouldn't it be cheaper and nicer to have the walls plastered properly?
