Brown cord sofa

I have a dark brown cord sofa and I can't get a modern feel in my living room. I'm looking online and grey seems to be the color to combine with it, but my living room is heading to old school dark brown furniture theme and I want something more modern...any colour combo ideas? I have dark brown side tables which I would like to paint and I need to buy curtains, but can't decide on colour. Any ideas? Anyone else with a dark brown sofa, but modern style room?

Turquoise? Lime green? I googled and (apart from this thread ) something along the lines of '1000 brown sofa dressed designs' came up on Pinterest.

I think you have to pitch it right. You can't do uber modern with cord, it has a homely feel, I think the second picture el posted is about right, a modern grouping of pictures and geometric print rug. I think plain walls rather than wallpaper.

I have never tried it, but when I had a really ugly corduroy sofa (light blue and gold!) I researched dying it a different colour. I think it can be done with a special sofa paint, so if you fancied a charcoal grey or navy and you have a plan b if it all goes wrong you could give it a try? In the end I just bought a new sofa.

If you're not going down that route then maybe pale greys with copper accent items (I have actually spray painted lampshades and things in metallic paint and they turned out really well - much better than i expected)

I would love to dye the couch but too scared that it will go wrong. I think I'm just going to have to accept that can't do modern. it looks like the first picture is what I'm going to aim for.
