Cordless blinds - any advice?

I'm looking to get a cordless blackout blind for the soon-to-be nursery for DC1 and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on whether a side winder mechanism (like this one) or a spring loaded pull mechanism (like this one) is better / less annoying?

All advice or experience of either gratefully received!

We loved our pull spring ones when DS was tiny (like your second link). Not so much when he got older and decided it was highly entertaining to play with them until one broke.

I'd go for the side winder if I were you!

Thanks playduh, I hadn't even thought about that - at the moment I'm struggling to think about DC1 actually being here, let alone being able to break a blind!! Smile

IKEA do fab blackout spring loaded blinds in different colours and sizes.

A lot of reviews I read ion sidewinder ones are bad, so if going with one do your research in the exact brand you are wanting to buy.

We got the IKEA TUPPLAR blind for the nursery and it's fab. ( will eventually get around to covering it with fabric!)

we got the thermal spring loaded one for Blinds to Go and had problems with it as it had to be encouraged to go up. It was not cheap.

The ikea ones sound great. I'd have been much happier with our spring loaded ones if they'd been an IKEA type price.

Bluecarrot is it possible to cover them with different fabric then? One of the things that put me off the Ikea ones a bit was that they were very plain.

We've just bought a cordless blackout blind from Web blinds. They've lots of different colours and choices of what to have on the end of the puller bit.

I don't see why you couodnt cover them, obv using a light material rather than upholstery weight. Just make sure to take extra depth of rolled up blind into account when installing the hardware.
I've also seen them painted.
They are so cheap I figured it's worth a shot!

Sorry - yes I have and it looks great. I'll upload a picture tomorrow when DS wakes up.

I chose quite a dark blue and the colour is great, very deep.

Do you find you need the curtains as well? I was hoping we might get away with just a blind but I guess there will be some light leakage around the edges....

I'm going to go to Dunelm this weekend and have a look at the side winding mechanism to see if it's any good.

We'd already put up the curtains before we bought the blind but I think you could get away without them as it's pretty dark in there.
