What would you do?

We moved into our new house at Christmas. It badly needs a new kitchen but we won't be in a financial position to replace it for a few years. The worst thing about it is the flooring. It's white Lino with grooves in it and it's awful. All the dirt gets stuck in the grooves and it always looks filthy. I can never get it clean. I've got two young kids and it concerns me that so much gets stuck in it when my 1 year old is eating things off the floor constantly.

Trying to decide if it's worth reflooring it with something more practical if we're looking at replacing the kitchen in 2-3 years.

Can you get an offcut of lino that isn't as bad? I know when we were doing up a house on a budget, we were able to get a piece of Lino very cheaply because it was the end of the roll.

Another alternative would be to use laminate, but the stuff that is suitable for kitchens is very pricy.

Alternatively what about a steam mop? I have friends who swear by them for getting floors really clean.

Lots of carpet shops do lino off cuts. I'd definitely go look.

If you can afford to do the floor now and leave the rest of the kitchen I would do that - we have his return done our kitchen but retained the same floor tiles and as the footprint is the same it looks fine.

Re your DC eating from the floor - I wouldn't be concerned, the floor is probably no dirtier than any other but the design of tile makes the dirt stand out IYSWIM?

Yeh I know what you mean. It's probably no dirtier but it looks awful and I'm embarrassed having people over because it looks like I don't clean.
I've got a steam mop and tried that, regular mop and down on my knees with a scrubbing brush and it just always looks filthy. It's also been laid so badly that it's all lumpy and horrible. I could live with the kitchen for a few years although we need a new hob too. Tbh id rather live an extra year with that kitchen and get the floor replaced now so think that's what we'll do. We eat in the kitchen too so everything the kids eat goes all over the floor. The bolognese won't lift for example lol.

I would just get an end of roll Lino piece, dirt cheap, for now. I wouldn't tie myself into flooring that might not be what you want when you redo the kitchen.

We put lino down in a bathroom that we knew we wouldn't otherwise e touching for a couple of years. It cost about £30. Just do it as a temporary measure.
