painting garden trellis

I'm about to buy some privacy trellis but want to paint it - not stain it. Have you ever done this? Is it a pain to do and does it take lots of costs? I could buy it ready painted but it's much more expensive and can only find one supplier of ready painted trellis

Use a little roller...like a radiator roller.

Use the type of paint sold for painting fencing and sheds - available in lots of different colours. Lie it down flat on top of a dust sheet or old tarp, etc to paint. I'd use a brush to be honest because you're never going to cover all of it using a roller.

Yes, we painted our fence, trellis and planter boxes black. Looks nice, used a brush not a roller (well dh did it, my suggestion though!).
