How can I update this kitchen?

Just moved so can't afford to rip out kitchen.

I was thinking of painting the units, removing the current odd shape table and at a stretch, perhaps replacing work tops.

But I'm not sure what colour to paint the units so it will go with the tiled floor (browny / orange / light terracota style tiles) or the twee country wall tiles?

Could I replace the table with a rectangular breakfast bar instead?

Any and all inspiration welcomed as I'm a bit overwhelmed.

I like those tiles Blush

This is our kitchen now. Before, it looked exactly like yours! Honest.

Here's what we did: replacement doors from kitchen door company.com, made to measure with fixings ready to go - £345 for 10 doors and five drawers. Removed pelmets and cornice bits, retired - bought on eBay for 100 quid, tiled it ourselves thanks to YouTube videos! Fitted new work tops from b and q at a cost of 150 quid. Painted sides of taller units as they were pine like the doors. Handles from ikea - 8 pounds for two.

So all in, including paint about 700 pound. I know it's not high end but I love it! No one can believe it's not a new kitchen.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

that is gorgeous lamp!

Just realised I said I 'retired'! I wish! Meant 're-tiled'!

Why thank you mrsmeerkat! Not a great photo - there is more kitchen than that but DH is sorting out garden so other side is full of plants and stuff! We replaced one of the cupboards with a wine rack, you can just about see that in the photo, just three insert ones from focus DIY.

I know exactly what previous posters mean about painting the doors. My parents did that and they are great DIYers, real attention to detail. Took them months but the doors just looked dated as the paint doesn't change the style of them. They lasted three months then did exactly what we did. Now there's a first!

Wow - your kitchen looks amazing.

Ok good to know budget is realistic before I go round getting quotes

Yes - think I'm veering towards getting new doors and work tops

Thanks so much

ps I see only one person likes my existing tiles Wink

We have replaced the doors on our kitchen - I also put a few new units in and retrofitted some wirework so make a few of the cupboards more useable. I kept the tiles as they were harmless porcelain ones, the appliances were all newish but I got a new fridge freezer, induction hob and chimney hood. I still have the plinths to cut and new vinyl floor to put down... but will spend £2000 total and it is like a new kitchen already.

Found the best VFM on doors and handles at Lark and Larks, very easy delivery and good customer service too- they went through the order with me over the phone to check everything was right.

Value for money

Your kitchen looks very similar to how mine was. I painted the cabinets and they look so much better! I used Zinsser as a primer (amazing stuff, covers ANYTHING) then glossed it with Dulux diamond satinwood in Jasmine White. The gloss does take a few days to fully harden, but it's definitely worth it.

I love the tiles 😊 especially the fencing!

Then again, I always like to see these - mum and dad had them in their bathroom and I used to spend hours picking out things like horse, bird in them 😊 I always find it odd when they have them all the same way. Parents went for higgledy piggledy 😊
