Paint and Colour-scheme to match this hideous sofa.

Moving into a new house shortly and popped into a second hand furniture store whilst out with DP and MIL. They spotted this hideous sofa coming off the van and being set up in the shop, purchased it on the spot despite my best pleas because they "couldn't pass up a bargain" to be fair to the sofa, once it was fully plumped up etc it looked better than in the pictures and is relatively new but still...

My original plan was to buy black or grey sofas, and have light grey walls with white skirting, and now I'm stuck with this camel corpse coloured monstrosity I'm clueless, and lounge needs painted before it is delivered early next week! Any suggestions are most welcome!!!

*ps genuinely not being ungrateful, just bloody hate brown and camel sofas!!

Ooh I quite like it. Check out just walnut by dulux. Despite the name it's a nice warm grey, I think it will work with that sofa.

Get the covers dyed? Get it recovered? No point changing everything else if it is the sofa you hate!

Could you not just get some throws and cushions in your preferred colour scheme?

If you have enough money to buy a sofa, you might be able to use the money to get some loose covers made. (I'm guessing you don't sew, or you would have already thought of that).

I am sitting on an ancient, but recovered, sofa at the moment and it looks fine.

I'd go for a fairly neutral scheme so that you can change things when if you get a new sofa!

Just white or cream walls etc, but add colour with a throw, cushions and curtains etc. I usually find the cushions I like first, then pick out a colour or two from the pattern for other accessories.

I love orange, green and purple (or all three if you're feeling brave!)

I can sew but don't have a machine atm, that was my first thought because we have pets, the other reason why I didn't want a fabric sofa! Worst thing is, this cost more than the 2nd hand one I had already planned to buy, so another one is out of the question for a good while!

New house is being completely re-decorated as the previous owner painted the lounge jet black, and whilst I'm a bit of a goth at heart I don't fancy living in Draculas castle, so any colour considered!

All the more reason for a throw then!

I love cushion shopping and don't need any excuse to go to Dunelm!

Not very gothic, either of these, but just to show that this colour will work with any other colours, all is not lost!

I have a bed with a headboard in a similar colour and it took me ages to work out a scheme to complement it.

The walls are skimming stone by farrow and ball (a stone that could read beige or grey) with lighter white/off-white woodwork.

All the accessories are either white or taupe/greige (Brissi and the White Company have loads of accessories, cushions etc in the right colours). Also have a couple of pieces of dark wood furniture. The only really vivid colour is from the tree outside the window.

It's very restful! Agree with PP that a neutral scheme would be easiest

MARK I surprisingly like those colours! I wouldn't have thought of a more burnt orange/red

Daerie I like the sound of that actually, planning a more colourful bedroom and spare room but I like my lounge to be chilled out!

Try Charleston Grey by F&B. It would pull grey and beige together very well.

We have a slightly similar colour. And we have mauve cushions, throws, curtains and accessories (This is the only photo I have on my phone and I had to zoom in, sorry!).

I have that colour sofa, I think yours with the right cushions would look lovely.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine we bought it second hand, so depending on price it might be do-able!

You have 2 choices:

• keep the sofa you hate and work around it

• get rid of it and go with your original plan

You want a chilled room? Can you seriously see yourself relaxing on the bosom of that camel corpse? Or would it stress you out everytime?
Will you love it forever more or if given a chance set fire to it without thinking?

Listen to me. Do yourself a favour and get rid of the bloody thing already. It's no good. It never will be.
You can not polish a turd

You could play it safe and go with neutral cream walls. It is more likely to go well with your next sofa too without having to redecorate.

I think light blue or duck egg would also work on the walls. You could get patterned cushions with a similar blue or duck egg colour on them too.

i think it's fine - mind you I like a bit of 70s chic

agree though that with a few throws and cushions in soft creams and greys, you'll hardly notice it.

I used to have a similar coloured sofa (also bought cheap) and I lived in a rented flat with cream walls and carpet. I hated it, despite numerous attempts with different colours of curtains and cushions it always looked very bland

I have a similar coloured suite and matched it with turquoise patterned curtains, neutral walls, lots of textured cushions and throws.

If it's any consolation I purchased black and grey sofas with the same intention as your colour scheme, however once I got them in I realised that if I did the walls the lovely grey I had in mind I would feel like I was sat in a posh hairdressers circa 1987.

I like the duck egg.

Oh god don't do it. When DP and I moved in together we bought a second hand sofa, chosen solely for the quality of being in excellent condition but cheap. I have hated the ugly bastard thing from the second I laid eyes on it but I had to be sensible about it as we were really broke and my parents were subbing kitting out our flat as it was.

That was nearly ten years ago. The sofa is still here. I have no words for how much I hate the thing at this point. DP professes to 'quite like it really', which somehow makes it worse.

That sofa is not too bad - I was expecting a multi coloured monstrosity!

You could just go with your original colour scheme plan - the right shade of grey on the walls & grey & black cushions & throws

We've got an old blue sofa which we got from a charity shop for £30 about four years ago. DP and I brought it home in the back of an old estate, the boot wouldn't close properly so we tied it down with rope. It was drizzling and really windy when we got home. The sofa was basically acting like a sail blowing both of us around the garden when we carried it into the house. We were laughing and probably looked like a right pair.

It's moved house with us twice, once across the country. It's usually got a throw half on half off it. And the cushions are constantly a mess. I don't care if I catch the dog on it. It's a perfect fit for our family of four so we can watch films together. Me and DP can just about squeeze on it lying down. I've slept on it when I've had toothache, the DC have snuggled on it under blankets when they've been poorly. It's suffered many games of 'the floor is made of lava' and den building. It is ugly as. But it does not matter.
