chalk paint for mahogany fire surround?

Our fire surround is dark, large and very old fashioned. It's 90's mahogany and we want to change it.

Can I use chalk paint on it?

Yes, I painted our brick fireplace with chalk paint a few years ago and its fine..instead if waxing it afterwards wither leave it chalky (risk it getting marked ) or use polyvine

I painted a similar fire surround with eggshell paint and subsequently used satinwood on it too with good results.

We painted our orange pine monstrosity with a few coats of zinsser bin primer and eggshell paint.
