Lightening it up with a light cream or a pale grey will make a huge difference. I'd also look into replacing the doors as achieving a good painted finish is time consuming.

putty colour or soft olive green

Yep, replace the doors and get something plain and sleek to go with your lovely tiles. The current doors would still look a bit old fashioned/80's/cottage-y after painting, sorry.

Plus if you paint you'll scrub the paint off when you clean/knock the doors.

Ok, thanks. Not really wanting to replace doors yet, as have the whole house to update. Also the sides will still be a dark colour.
Ill maybe look into professional painter who can paint them

Painting them won't be that hard. I'd use a few coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint or General Finishes milk paint, sand with really fine sandpaper, then use a very good varnish on top. We are about to use this varnish on our floors as it is supposed to be really hard wearing and very easy to apply (with a sponge or cloth rather than a brush).

This style of tiles is really in fashion at the moment. You can easily find some inspiration in Pinterest. Okay, maybe my example isn't so accurate, but you can still see the color palette and what goes well with what.

my cupboards have been painted for years and I havn't scrubbed it off yet!

Maybe do a block in black, where you have two top and bottom the same size. Use spray paint - and place on bricks so you can do edges at the same time

SexNamesRFab · 17/11/2015 17:22

I would try French grey.

OliviaTJoyce · 01/12/2015 11:52

If you have a small kitchen, dark colours will make it look even smaller, yes. But you can still use them to accentuate using small objects. Your countertop could be black, for example. Anyways, I just gave the idea for an inspiration :)

Grey with gold handles

Parisian grey from Annie Sloan is gorgeous and would go will your tiles

I would update the handles too
