insulation properties of plantation shutters

We are considering getting plantation shutters in the square bay windows at the front of our house. The windows are single glazed with lovely lead light transoms at the top. I don't want to cover the lead light bits so we are leaning towards cafe style shutters but I'm worried that in winter the gap will let all the warm air out. Has anyone else had similar experience?

Have to say I'm not a fan of plantation shutters - double glazing will have much better thermal properties, especially with modern glass, and you can have the transom sections encapsulated so you don't lose them.
