Disguising a hideous patterned sofa?

We are going through a tough time financially. Our old sofas are falling apart so my MIL who is getting new ones offered us hers. They are very comfy but the patterns are those which a traditional 79 year old would choose. Hideous in my subject seems mean now. Any ideas on disguise. Cannot afford to get it recovered. I thought throws but did wonder with how wonderfully creative people in MN are anyone any other ideas. Also can anyone recommend any throws to cover large sofas?

Well....it IS hard to recover so I won't suggest that. What I did was choose thinish fabrics and tuck them in all over the sofas....so I had multiple bits of nice, thickish fabric which I placed first on the cushions you sit on...and tucked it underneath all over...then I did the same to the back rest section with another piece.

Looked less studenty than throws. And you can pull em' off and wash easily.

Oh I like that idea. So tucked under each individual cushion. Did you use different fabrics or the same? I like that different fabric look actually think DFS have one.
